On our final day we took the ferry back to Stromness and went climbing and abseiling on the cliffs at Yesnaby, before returning to the school in the afternoon. A great time was had by everyone, and thanks to Phil and Hedi, our instructors, we survived all the challanges they threw at us and learn many new skills – especially “teamwork”. Hoy trip – Day 4
June 28th, 2006 by glaitness in Hoy · No Comments
In the morning we went to Rackwick beach, where we split into two groups. While one group set up tents and learnt about camping skills, the others went kayaking on the burn nearby.
A few went capsizing as well! In the afternoon the groups took part in a contest to build the best raft and then sail it on the loch. After an evening meal at the local inn we all went down to the local beach to practice our archery skills.

Hoy trip – Day 3
June 23rd, 2006 by glaitness in Hoy · 2 Comments
Today the two classes met on the Hoy pier as one departed and the other arrived. Both groups took part in an environmental awareness activity where they worked in pairs, leading one another amongst the woodland, while blindfolded, to a shrub or tree, after which they had to find their own way to that same place with the blindfold off. Then they planted their own tree. In the evening the new Primary 6 group did an orienteering activity in small groups in which they had to find answers to questions along the way.

Two classes of Primary 6 pupils are taking part in a week of activities on the Island of Hoy in Orkney. Each class is spending 2 nights in the Hoy Outdoor Centre – the first group of 17 pupils is there from Monday to Wednesday, and the second group of 19 will be coming on Wednesday and returning on Friday.
In the morning we split into two groups. Some went climbing in Stromness while others went kayaking in a disused quarry nearby. In the afternoon we all caught the boat to Hoy, where we had an evening meal at the outdoor centre before going down to the beach for a session of archery.
Despite the really bad weather, everyone is having really great fun as you can see from the following videos. Click the following words to download a video of each of the day’s activities, but be patient, they may take some time to appear. Please feel free to add any comments.
Norway Constitution Day
May 24th, 2006 by tgeddes in Events · 49 Comments
Primary 5 pupils attended the annual celebrations in Kirkwall marking the day when Norway received it’s first constitution and became an independent nation on 17th May 1814. Orkney has always had strong links with Norway and representatives from the County of Hordaland were there to celebrate the occasion along with those who had sailed across from Norway and children who had walked shorter distances from the local schools of Papdale and Glaitness. The entertainment was led by singers, dancers and fiddlers from St Andrews Primary School in the Orkney district of Tankerness.
All over Norway, children’s parades form the central elements of the celebration. Each elementary school arranges its own parade through the local community, led by the school’s own marching band and with an abundance of flags. You can read more by clicking on the following link:

Nethybridge Day 5
April 23rd, 2006 by tgeddes in Nethybridge · 16 Comments
After a bonfire and barbeque on Thursday evening, our final day at Nethybridge involved a trip to Loch Morlich in the morning, where we enjoyed a lovely walk in tranquil surroundings. In the afternoon we set off on our 8 hour return trip to Orkney, having had an intensive but memorable week, full of challanging and life changing experiences.
Everyone had a really good time thanks to all the staff of Abernethy Trust who were so friendly, enthusiastic and highly motivated, and had everything so well organised. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and we are all very grateful for the time and help they gave us.

I really enjoyed the zip wire because it was very exhilarating and fun. I also loved the adventure course because there were so many activities that were all fun. – Blogged by Richard Dalrymple
